The creation of the Water Grid saw 16 separate organisations that previously owned and operated the bulk water treatment, storage and transport infrastructure amalgamated into four bulk water businesses. This simplified the ownership structure, while enabling the new Water Grid to bring a regional focus to infrastructure planning and water management for the first time.
Over the coming years, the 10 regional councils will amalgamate their distribution and retail functions into three combined distribution and retail organisations. This will then complete the structural reforms for the South East Queensland water market.
In addition to the Water Grid Manager, the other three bulk water organisations involved in the bulk water aspects of the Water Grid are:
- Seqwater: Manages the region’s dams, weirs and water treatment plants. Seqwater is also responsible for catchment management and the quality of water from these assets.
- WaterSecure: Operates the Gold Coast Desalination Plant and the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme producing, respectively, desalinated water and purified recycled water.
- LinkWater: Moves drinking water from treatment plants and reservoirs through bulk pipelines and into the distribution networks.
We purchase the services to store, treat, produce and transport bulk water from Seqwater, WaterSecure and LinkWater to sell to Grid Customers.
